Project Highlights

  • New Performing Arts Stage: The existing gazebo, a long-standing feature of the square, will be replaced with a modern performing arts stage equipped with a green room, facilitating a variety of community events and performances.
  • Expanded Green Spaces: The renovation will increase the size of the square and its lawn areas, providing more open space for relaxation and gatherings.
  • Children’s Play Area: A new hillside play area will be introduced, offering a safe and engaging environment for children.
  • Modern Public Restrooms: The project includes the installation of updated restroom facilities to better serve the needs of the public.
  • Infrastructure Improvements: Upgrades will be made to the square’s infrastructure, including water, wastewater, and stormwater systems, ensuring sustainability and resilience.

Funding and Timeline

The renovation is financed through Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds allocated by DeKalb County. Construction is expected to take approximately 10 months, with the goal of completion before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Community Engagement

The project is a response to extensive community feedback gathered during the development of Decatur’s Town Center Plan 2.0. Assistant City Manager Angela Threadgill emphasized the city’s commitment to continuous improvement, stating, “We aren’t resting on our laurels when it comes to making Decatur the best it can be for all stakeholders.

While construction is underway, portions of the square will remain accessible to the public, ensuring that the community can continue to enjoy this central space during the renovation period.

This ambitious project marks a significant step in Decatur’s ongoing efforts to foster a vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic downtown area.
